| Chiswick House and Gardens |
Chiswick House and Gardens is one of the most glorious examples of 18th-century British architecture and landscaped gardens, with over 300 years of discovery, inspiration and delight. Art and culture has always been at the heart of Chiswick House and Gardens – from Lord Burlington’s collection to artists today. Rather than a conventional home, Chiswick House was a bold architectural experiment. It also provided an exquisite setting for Burlington’s collection of paintings, specially-designed furniture and souvenirs from his European travels. |

| Visit to Compton Verney, Warwickshire |
Step out of the ordinary with 120 acres of art, nature, and creativity. An extraordinary place filled with inspiration and imagination, outside and in. Leaving at 9.00 am from Rickmansworth, the cost is £57.83 (or £62.83 with soup) per person and includes coach, morning coffee, lunch and guided tour. (See booking form for more information). Compton Verney has many collections some of which are mentioned here: Folk Art Collection The largest collection of Folk Art in the UK. ‘Folk Art’ – sometimes known as ‘naïve art’ – refers to art made by highly skilled people who wished to express their creative urges but had no formal artistic training. Growing out of the long-established craft traditions in local communities, folk art can encompass objects made for a specific purpose – such as shop signs, agricultural implements and weathervanes – and decorative works created primarily to satisfy the maker – such as street scenes, collage pictures and even moving automata. Often, these items provide an insight into what life was like for ordinary people, both rural and urban, during the nineteenth and early twentieth century. The current display has been curated by artist and designer Mark Hearld. Northern Europe1450-1650 This collection features artworks produced in Northern Europe during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Religion was one of the most important features of life at this time and religious commissions accounted for much of the artistic output. The purpose of religious art was to function as an aid to worship, connecting the viewer with the story of Jesus’s life and suffering. The works in our collection encompass a range of formats: from small, intimate paintings that would have been displayed in private homes and chapels to large, dramatic altarpieces and emotive sculptures. Marx Lambert Collections This collection was formed by the artist Enid Marx (1902-1998) and historian Margaret Lambert (1906-95), who together shared a love of English popular art. Writing several books on the subject, they defined their interest in ‘the art which ordinary people have, from time immemorial, introduced into their lives, sometimes making it themselves, at others imposing their tastes on the product of the craftsmen or of the machine.’ The Marx-Lambert collection features ceramics, glassware, corn dollies, canalware, and papier-mâché figures. Miniatures 1550-1850 Co-curated with portrait miniatures specialist Emma Rutherford, this sumptuous exhibition will delve into the fascinating history of portrait miniatures. Compton Verney’s 72-strong Grantchester Miniatures collection will be displayed in its entirety for the first time, along with examples from the Dumas Egerton Trust collection of over 800 miniatures – on long-term loan – and key works by individual collectors. This will provide you with a rare opportunity to view works by many of the leading miniature painters to have worked in Britain, from Isaac Oliver and Samuel Cooper to Richard Cosway and George Engleheart. And much more see https://www.comptonverney.org.uk/ For more information on the various exhibitions visit Compton Verney website - click HERE For BOOKING FORM click here or go to Our Society / Documents |

| Standen House, Sussex |
Standen House is a creative masterpiece by Philip Webb (built 1891-94), inspired by Sussex vernacular architecture and furnished by Morris & Co for the Beale family in the Arts and Crafts style. For its time it was very comfortable with electric light and central heating. The light-filled graceful rooms show off the many colourful fabrics and wallpapers designed by William Morris. Many of the beautiful embroideries were made by Mrs Beale and her daughters, to Morris designs. Note the lovely de Morgan tiles. The 12 acre garden is divided into outdoor rooms each with its own theme, designed by Margaret Beale: Quarry Garden, Terrace with spectacular views, Lower Garden, Rosery and lovely Kitchen Garden, surrounded by an estate of 100 acres of woods and fields. James Beale came from a Birmingham family of nonconformists. He was a successful solicitor working on Midland railway negotiations. The family were intellectual, cultured and progressive. They found Standen an idyllic home and barely changed anything. Enjoy the plants centre, second hand bookshop and a lovely shop full of beautiful William Morris inspired homewares, gifts, local products and souvenirs. | Visit to Koestler’s Annual Art Exhibition |
Many of you will remember the excellent lecture given a couple of years ago by Angela Findlay about art work in prisons. This led us last year to begin a relationship with the Koestler Trust, through our ‘Arts Volunteering’ programme. This year we are again supporting Koestler, the UK’s best known prison arts charity. Every year they hold an exhibition of paintings and sculpture by prisoners, at the Royal Festival Hall on London’s South Bank. Several of us visited the 2021 exhibition which was really fascinating and displayed work which showed real talent. Thousands of entries are received each year for what is a really prestigious event. This year the exhibition has been curated by Ai Weiwei, the famous dissident Chinese artist. We have been invited to an accompanied tour of the exhibition and an introduction to the work, usually given by a former prisoner. This year, the exhibition space will be transformed. Ai Weiwei’s design comprises of fifteen cell spaces that are based on the size of a typical cell in a UK prison, which roughly measures 1.8m by 3m. Each cell contains a multitude of work, with the smallest containing 78 and the largest containing 131. There is no charge for entry. You will need to make your own way there for 11.15am Monday 7th November. Nearest tube – Waterloo. BOOKING Please let Jeff Baker know if you are interested in attending – by email to Jeff_T_Baker@hotmail.com or phone on 01923 263062 |

| Hogarth and Europe at Tate Britain |
Discover Hogarth and his European contemporaries’ vivid vision of the changing 18th century. European society and culture changed dramatically in the mid-18th century. This was an age of opportunity and change, enlightenment and innovation, but also materialism, exploitation and injustice. In an affluent, cosmopolitan Europe, the seeds of modern empire, revolution and global war were being sown. In Britain, William Hogarth became famous for paintings and prints that captured the new modern experience with energy, wit and humanity. But he was not alone. Across Europe, artists were creating vivid images of contemporary life and social commentary. The rich and the poor, the immoral and self-deluding, the selfish and the selfless, were made characters in pictorial stories that caught people’s imaginations and took art in novel directions. For the first time, this exhibition will bring together Hogarth’s greatest works with those of his peers across the continent – including Francesco Guardi in Venice, Chardin in Paris and Cornelis Troost in Amsterdam – to suggest the cross currents, parallels and sympathies that crossed borders. The Arts Society Rickmansworth Day of Special Interest Hogarth and Europe at Tate Britain on Tuesday 22nd February 2022 comprising tea/coffee on arrival at 11am, a lecture at 11.30 am by Frank Woodgate followed by a light lunch and timed entrance at 1.30pm to the exhibition Name(s) Telephone Number Email In Case of Emergency Contact Number for 22nd February Cost as detailed below Adult £44 per person Concession (over 60/ Arts Society Member/Student) £43 per person Adult with Art Fund £36 per person Concession with Art Fund £35.50 per person Tate Member £27 per person Please circle as appropriate and if booking for more than one person please make it clear which category each person falls into. | Penshurst Place and Gardens |
VISIT TO PENSHURST PLACE AND GARDENS TUESDAY 28TH SEPTEMBER 2021 One of England’s greatest family owned historic houses, its history spans nearly seven centuries. Largely unaltered over the ages, Penshurst’s medieval Baron’s Hall (1341 ) has a 60ft high chestnut beamed roof, a collection of paintings, tapestries and furniture from 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. In 1521 Henry VIII used Penshurst as a hunting lodge and to visit Ann Boleyn at nearby Hever Castle. This is and was the home of the Sidneys. The dazzling Sir Philip Sidney was courtier, soldier and poet to Queen Elizabeth I, his mother was one of the Queen’s ladies. She nursed the Queen through smallpox, contracted it herself and was so disfigured she chose to wear a mask thereafter. The gardens, originally laid out in the 14th century, have been developed by the Sidneys since 1552. A mile of yew hedges divides the gardens into ‘rooms’ displaying seasonal colour, including the Italian garden, Rose garden, Grey garden, Stage garden, and much more. | CHRISTMAS AT KEW The Magic Light Installations |
CHRISTMAS AT KEW We will arrive at Kew at 17.00 just as it is getting dark and take a leisurely stroll around the gardens which are lit with thousands of lights. The paths are flat and there are seats on route. Afterwards there is an open air Christmas craft market and Kews on delightful cafe to visit. Now in its seventh year, the 2019 winter trail takes a magical new route and includes a host of all-new installations. Framed by glittering spiral trees, dynamic laser projections will illuminate the iconic Temperate House. A dazzling arch leads to a cascade of glowing silvery shards at the Treetop Walkway. Walk amongst immersive vines as they surprise with changing ribbons of light, and wander beneath the branches where mysterious fairy-fire known as Will-o’the Wisp softly glows. Familiar favourites will also return. The Holly Bushes will sing, the Tunnel of Light will twinkle with thousands of pea-lights, and the flickering Fire Garden takes its place amidst the festive experience. Walk under larger-than-life arches of light and beneath unique tree canopies drenched in Christmas colour. Christmas at Kew wouldn’t be complete without the Palm House Pond finale as jumping jets of light dance across the water to much-loved Christmas classics. Complete a walk under the stars with spiced cider, mulled wine or hot chocolate and end the evening browsing Kew’s gift shops. Why not pick up some treats for the journey home? Cost will be approx. £52 BOOKING OPEN WAITING LIST |

This major exhibition brings together 45 works by Vincent van Gogh to reveal how he was inspired by Britain and how he inspired British artists Van Gogh and Britain presents the largest collection of Van Gogh’s paintings in the UK for nearly a decade. | BURNE-JONES RETROSPECTIVE TATE BRITAIN |
Make your own way to Tate Britain, our group will have coffee, a private lecture and lunch. We will then be given timed entry tickets for the exhibition which we can take at our own pace. Day of Special Interest - Edward Burne-Jones at Tate Britain on Monday 12th November 2018 comprising a lecture by Rosalind Whyte, entrance to the exhibition and refreshments. The last of the Pre-Raphaelites, Burne-Jones is synonymous with a refined and spiritualised style of beauty. From being an outsider in British art, and spending much of his life in isolation, Burne-Jones(1833–1898) became a key figure in the art world at the end of the 19th century and a pioneer of the symbolist movement. He challenged society by disengaging his art from the modern world, offering a parallel universe based on myth, legend and the Bible. Working in a wide range of materials, he pioneered a radical new approach to narrative in works created for both public and intimate settings. This exhibition is London’s first major retrospective of the artist's work for over 40 years, and showcases 150 works in different media, including painting, stained glass and tapestry, all of which foreground Burne-Jones's belief in the redemptive power of art. Programme Monday 12th November Make your own way to Tate Britain, Millbank, London 11.00 Refreshments on arrival 11.30 One hour introductory lecture by Rosalind Whyte 12.30 Buffet lunch 13.30 Timed tickets to Exhibition Cost Adult £41 per person Concession (over 60/ Arts Society Member/Student) £40 per person Adult with Art Fund £33.60 per person Concession with Art Fund £33.10 per person Tate Member £24.60 per person To book complete slip below and return with cheque payable to TASR to Gill Gowing 94 Moor Lane, Rickmansworth WD31LQ - acknowledgement will be sent by e-mail or enclose a SAE Burne-Jones Day of Special Interest Monday 12th November 2018 Name: Type of ticket: adult / concession/ adult Art Fund / concession Art Fund / Tate member (please circle) Mobile contact number: e-mail address: In Case of Emergency contact number: |
