THE ARTS SOCIETY RICKMANSWORTH

A first for South West Hertfordshire

Launch of St Mary's Church Trail for Children

The Rickmansworth Decorative and Fine Arts Society (RDFAS) has prepared a NADFAS Children’s Church Trail for St Mary’s Rickmansworth.  This is the Society’s first Church Trail and the first in South West Hertfordshire.   It was launched at the Start of Year Service for St Mary’s School on 19th September. 2016  The service was led by the vicar, the Reverend Deborah Snowball and attended by the Chairman of Three Rivers District Council, Les Mead and the Area NADFAS Chairman, Mike Gadsden as well as Councillors Paula Hiscocks and Ralph Sangster.

The Trail was presented to the Church by Gill Gowing who had led the team preparing the Trail accompanied by Mike Gadsden and Sarah Harris the NADFAS Church Trail Advisor who had driven from Bristol to attend the launch.  It was received on behalf of the Church by Sebastian Bond accompanied by Deborah Snowball and Helen Gill the Head Teacher of St Mary’s primary school.

After the service some 60 children from St Mary’s School had great fun doing the  Trail assisted by members of either or both the church and RADFAS.

The Trail is designed for children aged 8 -12 but is really for people of all ages! The trail guides the participant round a church looking at the architecture, history and furnishings. A corresponding answer sheet is provided for accompanying adults. The aim is to encourage both children and adults to explore the building, to learn about it and enjoy the experience so that they are inspired to visit other churches.  Above all the Trail aims to be fun.

The questionnaire is an A4, black and white, two-sided sheet in a child-friendly design.

The trail may be used by children's groups, by families visiting the church, by clergy and staff and with schools.   Deborah Snowball, Vicar of St Mary’s, announced that she had learned “so much about her church from the NADFAS Trail!” .
